ABOUT PAY$HUNT
By Hillary & Heather St. Pierre
Pay$hunt (pronounced patient) is a play on words that makes you think about what it means to be a patient in the American Healthcare System.
All that Hillary St. Pierre wanted was a second opinion.
It was December 2006 and just nine months prior, at the age of 23, she had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. An emergency room nurse by profession, St.Pierre educated herself about the disease and discussed treatment options with her doctors. After multiple missed opportunities in treatment due to insurance delays, miscommunication, and fee for service questions, St.Pierre's treatment was delayed.
The disparity in the care we receive as patients drives this book to the heart of the reader. Patients rarely feel empowered because we may not know the system. Providers may be despondent because they want practice quality patient care, but the pay per service system is holding them back. This book questions accessibility and equity in the current American Healthcare System and begs the reader to ask if there may be a better way.
